For children who may not tolerate oral medications, intranasal sedation is a helpful alternative. It’s administered through a gentle nasal spray and takes effect in about 5–15 minutes. This method offers a deeper level of sedation while still allowing your child to breathe on their own and respond to basic commands.Just like with oral sedation, fasting is required after midnight, and a caregiver must be present to monitor your child the rest of the day.
This is the most common and gentle form of sedation for kids. With a small mask over their nose, your child breathes in a blend of oxygen and nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”), which helps them feel calm, relaxed, and a little floaty—without putting them to sleep. It’s especially helpful for easing anxiety, reducing a strong gag reflex, and keeping kids comfortable during treatment.Once their appointment is over, we flush the gas out with pure oxygen, so your child can return to school or normal activities right away.
With oral sedation, your child will take a liquid medication at our office about 15–30 minutes before treatment. This medicine helps them feel drowsy, relaxed, and in many cases, sleepy. It’s normal for kids to have little or no memory of their visit afterward. This option is great for children with moderate dental anxiety or those who need longer treatment. For safety, your child must fast starting at midnight before the visit, and a parent or legal guardian must accompany them and stay home with them afterward.
General anesthesia may be recommended for very young children, patients with special healthcare needs, or those who require extensive dental treatment. During this visit, your child is completely asleep—just like they would be for any other surgical procedure.
We partner with a trained dental or medical anesthesiologist who monitors your child closely, while one of our doctors performs the dental work. Having two dedicated providers ensures your child’s safety and comfort throughout the entire appointment, and allows us to complete all treatment in one visit.
Dr. Alex is one of only five dentists in the Austin area that has dedicated block time at Dell Children's Medical Center, to serve the highest risk patients in a hospital setting.

The effects of sedation depend on the type used and your child’s individual response.

Oral sedation helps your child feel drowsy, calm, and often sleepy. Your child may not remember much of their visit and might feel groggy for several hours after their appointment.
General anesthesia puts your child into a deep sleep. Afterward, it’s normal for them to feel disoriented or tired as the medicine wears off.
