What Are Cavities?

Cavities, also called tooth decay, are damaged areas on teeth where enamel and dentin have broken down. They stem from acidic byproducts when oral bacteria accumulate from inadequate hygiene. Over time, these acids degrade the protective enamel layer, forming vulnerable soft spots that progress into cavities.

Cavities seriously jeopardize dental health, potentially causing premature tooth loss, infections and other issues if left untreated. Contact our pediatric dental office in South Austin, TX right away if decay is suspected so we can quickly restore your child’s smile.

Using Laughing Gas For Anxious Kids

Children frequently feel nervous about their first cavity filling since the process seems frightening and unfamiliar. At Kids Tooth Team in South Austin, we provide sedation dentistry with laughing gas to ease anxieties. By breathing a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a nose mask, young patients deeply relax into a comfortable state that allows our dentists to restore teeth despite initial hesitations. Sedation transforms once-scary dental visits into positive experiences.

The Filling Process

Not sure what to expect from your child’s appointment? Here’s a quick breakdown of the filling process.

  • Numbing & Sedation – We begin by gently cleaning the area, then administer numbing medication to ensure comfort. Laughing gas can further relax anxious patients if needed.
  • Preparing the Tooth – Decayed enamel is safely removed by our dentists using a dental drill, exposing healthy tooth underneath. This eliminates damaged sections down to solid structure.
  • Building the Filling – Layers of tooth-colored resin material are applied to fill the prepared cavity. The doctor will sculpt the resin until it's perfectly contoured, then cure it with a UV light. Bite alignment gets checked before finishing.

Preventing Cavities

There are two very important steps you can take to prevent cavities in your child, as follows.

  • Maintain Proper At-Home Oral Hygiene – Ensure your little one is brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and help them floss every night before bed. Limiting sugar intake from snacks and drinks will also help reduce their risk of cavities.
  • Visit The Dentist Every 6 Months – Kids Tooth Team conducts thorough examinations at regular cleanings to assess dental health, identify potential issues early and apply preventive treatments like sealants or fluoride as needed.
